Well, Im standing here, freezing, outside your golden garden
Uh got my ladder, leaned up against your wall
Tonights the night we planned to run away together
Come on dolly mae, theres no time to stall
But now youre telling me…

I think we better wait till tomorrow
I think we better wait till tomorrow
I think we better wait till tomorrow
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Got to make sure its right, so until tomorrow, goodnight.

musings of a aspiring music director/sound techie

Saturday, October 17 2009

listening back to muse/killers/vintage 70s

i was hit with some inspiration.

most modern music/bands have the drum kit individually mic-ed up
ie: kick, snare, hat, tom1, tom2, tom3, and overhead condensers.

well for mainstream music (what little i listen to) you would hear that the kit is panned center and mixed directly to the stereo main output, or in certain cases, mixed mono to the group faders (with bass for some stupid reason) and out into the stereo mains.

now how about mixing it such that the snare kick and hat are panned center, and tom1 tom2 and tom3 panned from left to right in succession such that when the drummer-boy does a roll, it will sound as if it is actually “rolling” from left to right. also when the drummer-boy decides to do some cool tom-work,  it would sound much more interesting rather than remaining static in the center stereo/mono mix.

well, some people insist they know best, so….

BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER
SO many drummers can’t keep time for nuts,.

this is to address some idiots that think that handsfree mics are better than your run-of-the-mill wireless, MIND YOU THERE  IS A VERY HUGE DIFFERENCE HERE.
handsfree – mainly drama/speaking
wireless – on a stand, usually for more emphatic speakers, AND MUSICIANS.

now, if you’re stupid and still dont understand why, a handsfrees usually have a driver this – big. less driver space, less electric signals, more information loss. not to mention the insanely weak signal that would be a nightmare balancing with a 7 piece band.

the wireless is the direct opposite of that, 48V phantom that makes the techie alot happier with the reduced signal loss. ALOT happier. if the pros can sing with a mic-stand there’s no reason why you cannot.

now, who thinks a solid-state is better than tube amps? i really don’t know who. solid-states do have their advantages, only with seriously RETARDED people who plug keyboards into electric guitar amps, or acoustics. now apart from the stupidity of potential mis-use of tube amps, and the bi-annual need to change tubes (not even done by yourself)

give me another disadvantage.

finally, the title of MUSIC DIRECTOR does come with responsibilities, and more importantly, ability.

so what is the most defining factor of 6/8 time signatures? uhh, uhh uhh…….
so what is the role of a guitarist in the band? don’t make too much noise
so what is the role of a keyboardist in the band? SHREEDDDDDDDDDDDDD OH YEAH KEYBOARD SHRED.
so what is the latest trend in christian music? SHREEDDDDDDDDDDDDD OH YEAH KEYBOARD SHRED.

i’m sure alot of people support me on this.

well, at least i’ve to deal with such “music directors”, and people who don’t know squat about music.

well thank you Old Man, for making me such a lousy and crappy guitarist who is so damn critical about music.

so what is the latest hillsong album to hit the market? To The Ends of The Earth, definitely, i mean, First Love.

i apologize for the great amount of spite.

how loud?

Wednesday, September 30 2009

according to the monster 8 finger tapper,
norm stockton

HOW LOUD SHOULD MY AMP BE ONSTAGE?
I WANT TO BE SENSITIVE TO THE WORSHIP CONTEXT, BUT SOMETIMES WONDER IF THE BASS/GUITAR CAN EVEN BE HEARD IN THE HOUSE.

Whatever you do, TURN UP. Turn up as loud as possible. Don’t let those temperamental vocalists impose upon your TONE. ha – sorry…couldn’t resist!

Seriously, you have a great question. We bassists are always wondering how we can walk the fine line between being audible & being obtrusive in the worship environment. Let me provide you with the following for your consideration:

The only way you can be positively sure about your level in the house is to go wireless & listen as you walk around in the sanctuary during soundcheck. Unfortunately, most wireless systems negatively affect (i.e. “thin-out”) one’s bass tone. I was unsuccessful in my own experiences with this option for that very reason.

If your soundperson is reasonably competent & assures you that your level is ok, you’re probably alright. You might want to ask a friend who has decent ears to see if they concur.

Depending upon the size of the venue (i.e. small room, or gigantic hall) in which your fellowship meets, you might find that you can play at a higher volume level if you roll off some of the bottom end from your tone. Having a lot of low frequencies (100 hz and below) in your tone will definitely exaggerate the perceived volume of your bass in the house, especially if the room is large (like the gymnasium building my church calls a sanctuary!).

As far as the volume level of your amp onstage, I’d suggest that you set it as loud as you’d like, then turn it down until the soundperson & others onstage with you can tolerate it. If that ends up being too low for you, I’d recommend that you get a speaker stand and prop the amp up & aimed toward you (if you’ve seen “Grooving for Heaven”,Volume 2, that concept is demonstrated during the fretless bass section). It works fantastically, allowing you to play with a reasonable volume without blowing out those near the epicenter – ha (the above suggestion about rolling off the low frequencies a bit is also quite useful here as well, for the same reason).

In the final analysis, for a bass in the worship setting, it’s probably preferable to be slightly on the light end of the house mix, rather than being too loud. You can make occasional subtle contributions even when being a bit low, but have a great potential to disrupt & distract if the bass is pumping out excessive and inappropriate db’s.

Psalm 121

Sunday, May 17 2009

Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills –
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip –
He who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD watches over you –
the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all harm –
He will watch over your life;
the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forever more.

Waging
Warfare through
Worship.

encounter.

Sunday, December 28 2008

this word keeps coming back to me,
ever since camp,

encounter? to encounter.

i search for you, God of strength.
i bow to you, in my brokeness.
and no other King would have so humbly come,
to save my soul,

and heal, my heart.

and i have nothing more,
than all you offer me,
there is nothing else,
that’s of worth, to me.
